I think a lot of people really take the Russian law out of context. They said they are tired of all the propaganda, and I can see their point of view. Almost everywhere you turn, people expect you to support gay rights activism or be shunned. Now is that toleration which they so vehemently preach? No, it's a double standard.
OT: I won't really be watching the games either. I'm so out of tune with winter sports and don't really feel like getting in tune.
My teacher said the controversial law was against gay appearing on the media, ie you're not allow to mention anything concerning gays in the news, effectively making them invisible to the public altogether. This means that instances of violence against gays or anything similar towards them goes unreported. It probably doesn't need to be state that this law has made it much easier to commit bad things toward gays in Russia. To him, excluding gays from being mentioned is what ticks him off.
