which desk design do you think is better?

haha sounds good man, you still use yahoo? ahh right i see and yer sometimes once the thermal paste starts to dry up it can glue things to it, i normally use artic cooling mx-2 or mx-4 paste on my stuff. ahh right yer i take mine outside every now and then and give it a blast with some compressed air although maybe not as often as i should

well you plugged it all in to start with so not really much different this time lol. when i do my cable management in cases i just pick one wire and get that one sorted out and neat, then move to the next one until they are all in there the best they can be. at the of the day from what i remember you could not make it any worse lol so if i was you id just give it ago but photos is a must lol

yer some times you just have to say sod it lol. thats not to bad was that for a brand new build or an upgrade? if i was you id get a samsung ssd drive, i will be using samsung ssd drive in my build as the controller seems a lot better than the sandforce one and they have great reviews. 850 psu seems pretty high imo. its very doubtful you would pay for much let alone that lol[DOUBLEPOST=1405360373][/DOUBLEPOST]Had a few small bit turn up today

Two sata 3 cables and a nickel fillport

Also made a start on sorting the panels to cover the interior of the pc area
Area set measured out and with second layer of chemical release agent applied

Fourth coat of wax release agent applied

Gel coat applied and first layer reinforcement of 200g 2/2 twill weave carbon fibre laid up (I forgot to get photos of the gel coat on its own although its nothing special)

Third backing layer laid up of FIA grade 200g plain weave carbon fibre

Peal ply, infusion mesh and vacuum ports added

Bagging film and vacuum hoses added

Leak testing for loss of vacuum. Using a pair of mole grips to clamp off the vacuum bag from catch pot as I could not find the other clamp in all the mess

Infusion process done, lines clamped off and removed from catch pot and vacuum pump

Also not the other vacuum line clamp which I did find in the end

Also a very short video as some nice person was at the door so I had to stop for a second and forgot to take another

This panel is going to become the bottom panel in the top part of the pc area so it will sit under the motherboard.

Not sure what i should do with the side panels as yet.
1: - go with the carbon again, although this might make it pretty dark in there
2: - use white Perspex sheet on the side

3: - use mirrored Perspex sheet on the side

4: - use Alufibre for the side panel (also known as white carbon fibre)

Not sure which option would be/work better so any thoughts on this would be good

Yeah, i have you on Yahoo and saw your IM just now. I'm just not on the PC as much as i used to be, especially at night.

I used arctic silver when i put in the new cooler. I had picked a Crucial SSD as it was much cheaper than the Samsung and had great reviews, but the Samsung's were always the highest rated. I wasn't sure on the PSU tbh. I just kind of guessed on the 850.

What you recommend? I had an i5 4670 picked out. The GPU's i was looking at were the 660 or the R9 270x. I guess 750 would be more appropriate. How does that chip do under load? Would i need to get a cooler do you think or would stock handle it? The only intensive thing i would be doing is gaming.

I only use the air cans to blow out my machine. An Air compressor would do a much better job.

I don't think you understand how bad my cables are. lol. I'll have to send a photo.

As to the panels in your post, i have no idea what I'm looking at or their purpose :p

ahh ok mate thats cool

ahh yer not a bad thermal paste although it does dry out which as you found out can make removing heatsinks. i use mx-2 or mx-4 for the reason that it does not seem to dry up, so if you need to pull things apart its easy to do so and they also preforms a little than SC5. Yes its a good drive although like you said the Samsung is a little better. 850w is a bit high for a single CPU and GPU running stock settings, i would have said depending on how many drives, hard drives and other bits you have you could get away with a 550w psu although a 650w psu would give you some head room and mean the load was less on psu so it would work more efficient. if it was me id get a good 650w power supply and with the money you save put that in to a Samsung SSD or something else.

For the GPU i would go with the R9 270x over the 660 as the 270 performs better, the R9 270x is more like a 660ti performance wise so your getting a bit extra for your money . Well the i5 4670 is pretty much the top of the line cpu although its not unlocked, the older haswell cpu's did suffer from poor thermal interface but as it going to be at stock speed i dont see an issue with heat. the stock intel heatsink is not to bad really, at the moment it keeps my 2500k i5 @ 93.2 degrees F (34 degrees C) idle (core 1 which is my hottest core) and 5 mins under 100% load with OCCT it reaches 167 degrees F (75 degrees C) on core 1, the room temp is 79.9 degrees F (26.5 degrees C) and chassis fans are all running at only 50% (1000 rpm) so the cpu is ruuning 119.3 degrees F (48.5 degrees C) above room temperature. i would see how well the stock cooler performs for you as im not sure how warm your room is. the worst thats going to happen is you work out you need to buy a cooler but if you dont buy one from the start you wont lose money if its not needed. Most games are GPU intensive rather than CPU intensive now, with the exception of games like starcraft 2, world of warcraft, battlefield 3, GTA 4, flight simulators, bad company 2, basically most modern Roll Play Games (RPG), Real Time Strategy (RTS) and Free Roaming Games

ahh no im pretty sure ive seen a photo a while ago of how bad it is although it could have been someone else's mess lol

the black area (base/floor of pc compartment) in the photo is the plan i made yesterday and is black in colour. the white area's (sides of pc compartment) im unsure as what to use to cover theses with, out of the above options im not sure which would look better as i think maybe if it was done all in carbon it would look a bit dark in there. The mirrored might reflect the internal case lighting back at you and make it harder to really see whats in there. The white plastic sheet (white perspex) i think would work well with the colour theme of black and white and would also help to stop dust due to it being a smooth surface. The alufibre i think could also work well due it being a smooth surface so would help to stop dust, would have the same weave pattern as the carbon fibre but is more silver looking than it is white from what i remember of it which is a bit of a downer (ill have to dig out the sample of it and see how well the work)

the other option would be to paint the sides in white along with the other bits of the desk, this option is good as all the white would the be the same shade etc although doing it this way would involve a lot more prep work getting the surfaces good etc[DOUBLEPOST=1405411726][/DOUBLEPOST]pulled the carbon out the bag this morning

just needs a trim up and final polish[DOUBLEPOST=1405460703][/DOUBLEPOST]got the paint gun out first thing this morning and got some the switch panel in primer

may have gone a bit heavy with the primer trying to get rid of the fluffiness and rushing as i thought it might rain lol

nice big run on the corner but thats how you know you got good coverage :)
also got the hard drive section in place so the bottom area is now split in two

also got the bottom cover in the pc area although i still need to sort out the pci-e cable management

the pci-e cable are throw the holes that should be used for the sata cables at the moment

also got the top of the desk paint this morning so its now looking a bit better

also the front area of the lower compartment, reservoir is still in there as i also need to cut the hole for the fillport which i did not get time to do today

had some bits turn up today so i can maybe get a bit more done at some point tomorrow :)

got two fittings. one for the reservoir and the other for the fillport so i can get that set and cut in tomorrow with any luck and also got a bit hard tubing to make the connection between them

i did have a quick measure up to see if the fillport would fit between the upper and lower part of the case without you being able to see the underside of the fillport and the fitting

measurements look good as there is 36mm gap between the upper and lower part of the case which means with any luck by the time the roof in the lower part of the pc compartment is covered you will only be able to see the tube that goes up to it

also got the latching switches today so at some point i can wire them in to the lcd temp sensors and also sort out the case lighting plus there will be no more holes in the switch panel :) and can finally get an idea of what its gonna look like completed.

i must have had a mad moment when i ordered these as i seem to have ordered four of them

well got a bit more done yesterday and also had two bit of plexi glass turn up that im going to be using to mount the ssd drives on

first thing i down was sat down and made a quick diagram of how i was going to get the switch to switch on and off the lcd temp sensors while also keeping the led in the switch working. the lcd temp sensors work off the 5 volt supply and the led in the switch works off a 12 volt supply.
this is what i ended up doing to keep it simply

i ended up switching the negative side rather than the positive side so i could still keep the led in the switch working when the lcd displays were on

the two bits of plexi glass for the ssd drives

also marked the so they just need to have the holes drilled and then be mounted in the case, i may also install some LED's in there to back light the ssd drives

also used a bit of 18mm mdf to space the reservoir out so its not so close to the dividing panel which should help when running the tubes to it also means that the fillport wont be so close to the motherboard and cables in the upper compartment

also looking at having my PCI-e cables come throw this area in the upper compartment as they should still be usable with any graphic card of any length.

i also cut the hole out for the hard drive fan yesterday but dont have any photos of this.
i might get a fan grill and place the fan on the outside face so it gives a little more room inside this area
[DOUBLEPOST=1405813725][/DOUBLEPOST]Well got round to doing a bit more work to the desk today and a bit more damage to me not the desk

I laid up another bit of carbon fibre yesterday and while removing the peel ply from the back of the carbon sheet the peel ply came to hard part and pulling on it harder with the Stanley knife wrapped in up in it to give a better grip the peel ply ripped and I ended up smacking myself in the mouth with the back end of the Stanley knife breaking a tooth so not happy as I now have to wait till the 28th of this month before I can go and see the dentist about it but lesson learnt not to put the Stanley in the peel ply but rather put the carbon in oven to soften the resin (being lazy never works out well for me)

I had made the sheet of carbon to cover the back of the pc area

I did manage to get this today and used to some glue from the glue gun to seal the edges up, which will be removed and replaced with something black at a later date but for now this will help to stop any dust from getting into the corners

[/URL
]

I also used an off cut to cover up the internal part of the fan cut out, I know that you won’t be able to see this very well if at all but the cut mdf edges can be a bit rough and trap dust so this should at least help stop that

[/URL
]

Also got the LED’s under the motherboard fitted but not wired up as yet

[/URL
]

I then cut the fillport hole out and test fitted it to see what it looked like. Think the nickel works alright against the carbon fibre and goes with the nickel and acetal water block

[/URL
]

And then made the joining tube from the fillport to the reservoir

[/URL
]

[/URL
]

I then worked on the pci-e cable placements and went with this although im not to happy with them

[/URL
]

Just with the motherboard fitted and the graphics card the cables look a bit far away but i guess this card is a little smaller than some of them are and will be replaced soon. This is one of the reason why I moved them back a little bit just so that if the upgrade card is bigger ill still have room to fit it and the cables will look alright. At the moment the upgrade card I have in mind is the sapphire 290 tri x and may even get a second one and use crossfire

Well done a bit more this morning although not quite what I wanted to be getting on with but any progress on anything is one less job to do later.

I wanted to get all the case lighting in the upper part of case sorted out today but got side tracked when I started making a skirting board template

[/URL
]

So instead I ended up making some little bits go alone the wall to cover the gap that was there, they still need a bit of tidy up but that will do for now

[/URL

[/URL

I also ordered the plastic to cover the side panel inside the case this morning so though I would also trim the front area in a left over bit of carbon fibre

[/URL
]

[/URL
]

The top piece of carbon may well end up getting changed when I trim the rest of that area as I don’t like the join in it but needed to use it to the set the back piece, the top area under the lid will more than likely get covered in a single piece so there are no joining marks

I went for the white plastic for the side panels

[/URL
]

Thought this would work well, be in keeping with the theme, won’t trap the dust to much and will be less prep work than painting it
[DOUBLEPOST=1405976080][/DOUBLEPOST]Done a bit more this afternoon, finding it hard to sit still and chill out at the moment even thought it is hot

Started by fitting the plexi glass the ssd drives will mount to.

While I had that panel out I thought I would make a start on out sorting out the lighting as well. i did not want to put LED’s in the reservoir as I did not want cables on show so spent a little time thinking about the best way to go about doing it without having loads of messy cables on show and came up with an idea.

Had to make my own expensive depth gauge though because I no longer own a router (sure is one of things I need to replace asap)

[/URL

And this was the idea

[/URL
]

[/URL
]

Left a lot of wire mess out the back of the panel tho but at least it will be out of sight and may even be covered up.

[/URL
]

Had to get out the better glue gun to sort the mess out

[/URL
]

[/URL

Tested the LED’s just to see if they worked and also to see how bright they were (think they might be a bright to be fair)

Did a little more today

Started out with sorting the ssd drive mounts out

[/URL
]

And then attached it to the panel to get an idea of how they will look

[/URL
]

Made the power and data cable holes for the ssd drive

[/URL
]

Also had a few bits turn up today, nothing special but helped to get a few extra bits done

140mm fan grill for the hard drive fan, so I can now move that to the outside of the case to create a bit more room inside

[/URL
]

And also some bullet connectors to use for the switches and bits in that panel to make is easier to remove

[/URL
]

Next thing was to move the hard drive fan from the inside of the case to the outside

[/URL
]

Which give a fair amount more room in there

[/URL
]

Also left the ssd drive on the dividing panel for now

[/URL
]

Added the side panel to the hard drive area and cut out two holes to help with removing it

[/URL
]

And yes I did test fit it before I put the holes in a struggled to get it off again

The amount of cables that go to the switch panel so far and this is without two of the temp sensors wired in and also the case lighting is not wired in as yet

[/URL

Quick photo of the lower front compartment to get an idea of what it will look like with two ssd drives mounted

[/URL
]

Added a floor area to the radiator compartment

[/URL
]

[/URL

Tested the lighting

Motherboard led’s

With lights on in the room

[/URL

With no lights on tin the room

Jeez man, this has taken you a while :p
whats the hold up?

yer work killed nearly all play time last year :( but not to much more to do now that i can think of at the moment anyway

Well finally had the white plastic turn up today after 10 days of waiting and im also not that impressed with it to be fair. The piece on the right hand side looks like when they came to cut it they could not find the saw so they chewed it off instead. Lucky because it’s the bottom edge I can just fill it with white tiger seal when I finally fix it in place as at the moment its just got a few dots of hot glue.

Got the plastic cut and in place

Not much left to do now as far as building goes, although there is going to be some paint prep and loads of flatting primer, paint and polishing

1: - First thing I need to do is get my wardrobe made so I can get the end piece of the desk made and fitted

Been thinking about adding some shelves to the side of the wardrobe to give a little extra storage space for displaying some stuff

[/URL
]

both the desk extension/in fill piece will become a cupboard

2: - prep everything for paint

3: - prime everything and flat back

4: - cover the lower part of pc area

5: - make the cover piece for the radiator section and cut out the mounts

6: - need to make or buy some trim to finish off the edge of desk that fits against the wall

7: - need to find some handles for the cupboards

And apart from updating the hardware I cannot think of any other jobs to do but I’m sure I’ll find the odd one here and there but hoping for no other big jobs
[DOUBLEPOST=1406765041][/DOUBLEPOST]also came across the back plate for the graphics card today and although it wont be used in this or at least for very long anyway i felt the need to sort out the finish on it. although the black was ok im not a great fan of mat black and i never liked the fact the machine marks were left in it so i showed it some 320 grit paper which failed at taking the machine marks out, so i was left with no choice but to use some 280 grit on it.

it then ended up like this after

2nd stage with 320 grit

at this stage the plan was to paint the main part of it black and then the out line of the text plus the inside of the EK logo white to match the black and white theme but since then i had the idea of trying to get it nickel plated as a bit of a test to see how it comes out, the text outline and inside of the Ek logo will go black if i can get it nickel plate

seeing as i had the bright idea of having it plated i now need to polish it up to get a good enough finish on it to have it plated, i have sent off a few emails for quotes and turn around times so we will see what happens.

quick go at it with the first stage polishing compound to see what the damage was marks wise and its pretty good so with any luck should have it finished in a day or two depending on how much time i get to spend on it.

just a quick go so id not do the whole thing and the bit i did do is not great but it gave me a good idea of the marks still left to sand out. also the bolts that hold the back plate to card will also stay black

i may also depending on price see if i can get this done to save painting it

Going to apologise now for the number photos, I got a little carried away

Well set out to finish the back plate off today and although it’s taken from 8am to get it done I think it was worth the time to get it right. I’ve also had an email back from the plating company but I won’t give away price yet as I’d like to see what it looks likes finished first and also get your options as to whether it’s worth getting it done or if it looks alright polished.

Well what it looked like after the final stage with 1000 grit sandpaper

Just finished the first stage compound

I spent a while trying to work out what the two round marks where on it in the photo. Turns out it’s the down lighters lol. Guess that’s what you get after a few hours sleep

Polished aluminium with nickel plated water block

I like the look of it now its polished but it does not really match the nickel very well.

So the question is keep it polished aluminium or get it nickel plated to match the water blocks?

made a start on the finishing the end of the desk off that will sit up against the wardrobe.

adding some shelves to the upper part, some where to display the pc component boxes or keep other bits

had a mess around with some lighting as well just to see how well it would light the shelves up
this is with the led strip placed in the center of the shelf

this with the led placed pretty much along the front edge of the shelf

im not sure it really works for taller items but if there was to be smaller items on there i think it would work better
