well im in need of a new desk as my old desk is just not big enough anymore so thought instead of spending silly money on buying something from a shop which is not going to be that much bigger than what i have (its surface area that i really altho some extra storage would be nice). i also thought that if im going to build my desk i may as well build the stuff thats going to be in the room so they all match. all the desk design will be finished with a gloss black top and white gloss fronts.

Design one: is an L shape desk that should be able to houses two pc with no issues but i think it looks alot like kitchen units or at least it dose in the drawing

Desgin two: standard desk running the lenght of my wall and altho its not got as much surface area as the one i do like it better due to the fact it dose not have the kitchen look about it

Two ftw. #1 i think you'd be banging shit on the top shelves etc. Plus it looks like my kitchen lol. I'd not enclose my PC in anything though, but since you will have water cooling maybe it wont matter.

Yeah 2nd looks better...as damage, i tought the first one was a kitchen design and i was "why is he asking for desk...its a kitchen?!?"

yer i see what you mean about the first one althought even removing the upper cupboards i dont think would help. also might make the pc cupboard a little smaller and make it so the rads have their own space and blow hot air out side the case into the room (save on heating bills that way to lol) , a space for just hard drives, ssd, water pump and psu and another space for just the motherboard and reservoir which will be on show throw the plexi window at the front and single top window. as of yet i have not made up my mind if i want coloured tubing or dye in the coolant, will get lights to match what ever i go with.

gonna have the rads setup in a push pull fashion so thats 18 fans just on the rads and then one or two 120/140mm fans to add airflow to the motherboard section. ill get a spec list up in the next day or two of hardware that i will have in it altho i want for the ivy bridge cpu's so i wont be able to spec that part until march or april next year when they come out or when intel post some cpu specs.

done some designs of the pc cupboard on its own so you can get the idea of what i was talking about in my last post. also the round holes/marks on the computer case are going to be cut outs for water cooling tubes to pass throw and the square ones are for the power cables to run throw.

veiw from the top
pccupboardtopveiw.jpg

Veiw from the front with no front pannel on. also im thinking of having no optical drives at all hence why you dont see any at the moment
Frontveiwofpccupboard.jpg

Left side of the case. this is the side that will be in the seating area and will house 3 3x120 radiators
Leftsideofpccupboard.jpg

the last veiw is of the back. the reason that there is a big space left behind is for cables eg psu power cable, monitor cables, mouse cable etc to pass throw and still allow the desk to sit back to the wall. the lower part of the recess will go all the way to the right so the cable can pass out that way to the monitors etc

I would of preferred #1 if where you would be sitting at would of been at the corner, right in the middle, mainly because mine is a smaller version of it. Another thing is if you could add some sort of glass to the cabinets while using 1 door than 2 doors. I would snap a picture of mine but my desk area is a complete mess at the moment.

Also, the type of wood and color would make a whole lot of difference.

had a slight change and going to run with this. its going to be down the longer wall in the room and have a mactching wardrobe at the end. this time will have space to seat two people and two pc's or just the built in pc and a built in server.

you thought of having the chair in the V of the wrap around? We have a double-wrap around desk in our room with the PCs at the corners.

Here's a photo, bear in mind this was 2003, so ignore the hardware, lol

Actually, I'm still using the same PC case.

yer i had thought about it but the 2nd seating area dose not have to be so big as this is where i want to setup my benching system so when i build a new pc i can just throw it into an open air case and overclock and/or check that it runs stable before throwing it into its case but it could also be used for some paper and pen work.

i also wanted a desk that had a fair amount of storage so that i did not end up with loads of stuff on top of it. the corner desks are ok but you just can not fit enough storage in them to make it worth while and in the second space i was going to leave for a standard pc case to be put in (like you get when you buy an off the shelf desk) im now going to build my home server in there instead of putting it in another room or the loft space. this way i get to keep all my network gear, server and pc stuff in one space. only issue with this desk i have is there is no room for my network printer so im going to have to build a stand or cupboard to put that in (i guess its not such a bad thing as i can then keep both printer in the same place aswell as trying to keep the paper and inks etc with them)

edit: ive got quite a parts list going on at them moment tho. once i have worked throw most of it ill start posting it up (im not sure i want to work out the cost of the desk before i start building it. im thinking it would be a much better idea to do it after lol)

at the moment its not to bad as im at home doing paperwork and design work but the start of next year could change that as we have alot more work on. so sadly it looks like ill be out in the cold working on site again (i hope for not to long tho as i like not having to much to do but still earning money altho paperwork side of it is boring) and that reminds me i need to spend some time sorting out my tools as all my PAT test certs are out of date now and need to go over what materials i have on the van (good few hours spent out in the cold weather which wont be fun altho now quite a few of the tools are now in the house)

Medium-density fibreboard (mdf) for covering and then paint it with some nice glossy paint. when we get some good weather

also wired up one of my switches to see what they look like and if they work.

gotcha. I had to Google what MDF wood/board was. Would it withstand the weather there? Like, it wouldn't bulge up if it's in humid weather, etc.?

will do man. photos tell the story a lot better than words

lol yer its man made which is good so its pretty 100% flat unlike wood you get from trees so less work on the painting side of it. you can get two types of it one for indoors and one for out doors. the indoor one dose like water and will start to delaminate if it gets wet because its not sealed up (its not sealed as its for indoor use most people would paint it anyway which would seal the wood up. just dont use water based paint on it lol) the out door version is sealed up when you buy so it wont soak up water like a sponge and can still be over painted.

so aslong as you keep the indoors version inside it will be fine and once its painted it dose not matter as the paint will seal it up. ill be using the indoors version and painting it with car paint to give it a good hard wearing finish and to seal it up so it will be fine. if i was going to be covering it with a wood effect covering tho i would have used the out door version just to make sure if water got on it it would be fine

On an un-serious note, what part of the desk is that tube of Deep Heat for?

OK, here's a joke:

A guy goes into a chemist and says "I've got TWO girls coming over tonight, I need something better than Viagra"

The Chemist gets an unmarked jar from under the counter, "take one of these and you'll be good for HOURS"

Next day the guy come back and drops his pants and says to the Chemist "look at this".

He shows the Chemist his penis, which is red raw and has bits of skin coming off it, and says "have you got any Deep Heat?"

The Chemist says "What! You can't put Deep Heat on that!!"

They guy says "Oh no, the Deep heat is for my arms, the girls didn't show"

And keep the pics coming. It's looking good.

Wally didn't know what MDF was? LOL

I wouldn't have the time either...
