Yes much harder, but obviously an uneconomical technique.

I went to new york and at a jam session saw some dude shred as fast as YJM with his thumb alone. It was at smalls.

MB uneconomical, but obviously there is a tone reason for the choice, and people can overcome the handicap.

It's also not always about how fast you play. When you're improvising, note choice is quite important. And the ability to pick notes quickly that you didn't plan on.

LOL i accidently edited your post. Meant to hit reply.

I play guitar with my fingers. Paco de Lucia does, too, and lemme tell you he can play fast.

I like to use a highbred picking technique where I use my pick and fingerpick at the same time

My Uncle Peter (a famous guitarist here) sometimes used the thumb pick but mostly used his fingernails, all grown long and strengthened with Duco cement....for reals..
this is recorded on the porch of his house where i lived in the guest cottage in the back...spent many an afternoon cruising with him and uncle Dwight, drinking like fish and smoking killah weed..good times

hell yea bred.

The only problem with hibred picking i that the bass notes can be a little overpowering.

Of course, kurt rosenwinkel, along with many amazing guitarists use this technique, so it definitely has its merits.
