Petrucci is win.

Steve Vai gets a little too out there for me, but when he keeps it "simple" i really like some of his stuff.

Satriani also kicks ass.

I like 'out there' as long as it's....... right. LOL IDK how else to say it.

If it's just whimsical and out there, it's dumb, but if it's "outside" i like it.

I think players like Vai and them are SO good they just get uber crazy with sounds and FX and what not. Most likely because they get bored of "traditional" playing since it's so easy for them.

Angus Young, Eddie van Halen and Slash, all three of them are legends.

Slash is not a good guitar player....... even compared to people like Angus Young and such. Just sayin'......

This is about favorite guitar players, yes. So love him. They are legends, yes. So respect him. But Slash is not a good guitar player.

Well, they just get deeper into harmony, imo. When you get better, you stray away from pentatonic scales over I IV V progressions. And I am with you on this one, I don't like the super FX and shit. And I was talking more about "out there" in terms of harmony. I've never been a fan of tons of effects. I love real guitar playing real music. But, I was saying that Steve Vai can take the harmony "outside" and it can get intense. He can play melodically over really cool harmony, which makes for awesome sounds.

No, Slash sucks lol. And i don't think hes been a legend since like the late 80s

He hasn't don't much since then. I could be wrong. Was Velvet revovler really popular?

I guess he's a legend because everyone knows who he is. Probably more for his style than actual playing, but that seems to be the norm these days.

I classify good guitar players not only by their skills but also at their song writing and you can say what you want, but he's made some of the best solo's and bridges out there.

Slash is popular because he was in a popular band and he has the style and flash. It has nothing to do with his guitar skills.

Victor Wooten is a bassist. But yea, he's good.

Short, simple, catchy lyrics and melodies. Good performances. The characters of the band are good (personality, style, trend setting...etc.).

If you want to REALLY get serious, we can pick apart slash's playing note for note, and we don't even have to talk about music theory or ANY of that bullshit.

It's okay to like a guitar player even if he isn't the best in the world. It's okay even if he's not good at all. People love Neil Young..... he's not good at guitar, lmao.

In reality, the best guitarists are probably completely unknown to the world. Gypsy kids raised in spain who are given a guitar when they are 3, and that's all they do for the rest of their lives. Probably the best players in the world. You really think some guy in a top hat with his guitar down past his knees playing pentatonic scales over one chord jams can out-do them? No. You can still like slash more, though. That's freedom of taste and expression, and I support that.
