L4d1 is better in lots of ways. The campaign, the standard infected. But L4d2 has better graphics and gore and some of the new infected are beast too. Just like the new modes.
At the moment I'd choose for l4d2 to play. But in half a year l4d1 again. As lots of people will start playing part 1 again. Does that make sense?

Ya WaLLy Left 4 Dead 2 is a must have, I recommend starting with the campains though, I have some L4D2 friends on steam we can play on the co-op with

A mic is recommended though, there is a text chat option but using the mic is much more painless and quicker, also unlike in CoD people don't care how your voice sounds, as long as your cooporating
