Shred. YJM has just been knocked off the throne.
By a german jazz guitarist.

This is why he drinks heineken to the degree that he does (aside from his attempt to deal with the pain brought on by his tight leather pants and sting ray boots)

I just can't get over this solo.

Lol, Joe comments on everything but the guitar. It was taken with a cell phone or something so obviously the sound isn't going to be very good.

I feel bad for YJM though, i wonder if he knows he's been dethroned. He's probably questioning his life right about now.

Where do I begin? First I have to say it's pretty rediculous to compare the 2 and kinda ignorant. They are totally different styles. Kinda like comparing a Ferrari to a Maybach. They are both top line cars but very different styles. They both perform at the highest levels but serve different purposes. In all honesty I watched the youtube video and really was not into it as it's not my style. Yes, I was impressed. He is great and will wipe the floor with me but just not my style. To say either of the 2 suck would be ignorant. I'm sure many hate YJM but just like the jazz guy he is great.

I think this guy sweep picks every bit as good. Check out 1:02 on. I agree with Code, it's all personal preference. In the end, both are extremely talented and one of the best at what they do. To say one is better or one is "dethroned" is kind of stupid IMO.

I talk shit on yjm because he loves himself and because Code loves him so much :p.

Kurt is not a shredder. Even this video contains very little shred. I doubt kurt even practices bigass shred arpeggios.

In fact, I think his shred in this case is a little self-indulgent :giggle: and he probably knows it. But it's still cool, sounds cool, and he doesn't do it all the time.

And no, it's not all preference. I mean, preference itself is preference. Yea... duh. What you like is what you like. Kurt and YJM are better guitar players than Neil Young, for instance. Neil Young's huge following and his huge output of music have nothing to do with his guitar playing ability. His playing ability and understanding of the instrument is obvious from the palette he uses to make his songs. Simple doesn't mean bad, necessarily (I haven't said a word about the quality of his music thus far). Many of my favorite songs (which includes a host of jazz tunes) are extremely simple. I love blueses, vamps, and other simple tunes. But, Neil Young is still a really shitty guitar player.

And just so you know, how difficult something is to play or write doesn't and has never had any bearing on whether I like a song or not.

EDIT: Unless the whole point of the thing is that it's really hard. But then it's not listening because it sounds good. It's just like watching some dude lift a bigass tire in a strongman competition. It's epic, just not in a musical way.

EDIT: Unless the guy lifting the tire is Kurt Rosenwinkel

I have actually met YJM a few times and every time he was very gracious. I'm sure back in the day he was a douche but then again, who isn't. How many movie stars and other entertainers act like douche's yet many only remember YJM in the music industry. At least he has not killed any dogs, made a porno or blown all his fortune on crystal meth. As for Neil Young I don't think he put himself out there to be a great guitar player rather a musician/songwriter. As for YJM his intention was never to play fast but to emmulate a violinist. Weird how nobody gets mad at a violinist or pianist for playing fast.

I would have a hard time listening to the music that I listen to if I had anything against people for simply playing fast.

Derp.

And you are also completely wrong.... people give pianists an amazing amount of shit for overplaying.

Violinists, not so much, but they don't really get as much public exposure, as classical music is decidedly not pop. I just don't think many people identify with the instrument as much. That's my guess as to why, anyway.

And I don't think many only remember yjm. I think you might be projecting. There are plenty of well-remembered douches out there. I don't see why every time YJM gets made fun of, we should have to give out an equal amount of shit to every other target.

But still, the solo in this vid is sick!

Also, there doesn't ever have to be a tradeoff between being a good songqwriter and being a good musician. It's not like Neil Young sacrificed his playing ability to be a better writer, he just isn't a great guitarist. So what? Big deal. And I never said he claimed to be. Whether he claims to be or not is absolutely irrelevant to my statement.
