A great movie that you guys might like is "Religulous" it's directed by the guy who made Borat and is hosted by Bill Maher, funniest movie i've seen in a while. Great commentary on religions.

Holy shit. I must check that out tomorrow since I loved Borat (exclude dicks in hotel room scene). Thanks Riku.

Haha no probs, it's not exactly the same. But it's definitely hilarious and pisses people off, so that's always a bonus.

I find "Atheism" to be foolish b/c the whole premise of it depends on there NOT actually being a god when that just cannot be known.

Maybe there is a god but I find myself to be more Agnostic where the existence of a god is not knowable to a human.

I would agree with Pwn here. I consider myself an Atheist agnostic simply because we truly can't, for 100% certainty, ever know.

Agnostic atheism, also called atheistic agnosticism, is a philosophical position that encompasses both atheism and agnosticism. Agnostic atheists are atheistic because they do not hold a belief in the existence of any deity, and agnostic because they do not claim to know with certainty whether any deity exists.

Well there's over 50,000 religions in the world so someone HAS to be wrong. I heard this joke from a comedian saying that alot of us are going to be sitting up in hell going "who'd you think it was?"

In terms of the existence of God and the meaning of life, I think the meaning of life is the question of the existence of God, and if we where to know, there would be no meaning.

I'm an Atheist, definitively not an agnostic :giggle: I am 100% sure there is no god.
I have written prove that I do not pay church tax :( :)

Actually, responding to a post from long ago, I notice the opposite in many situations. I don't think i see more of one or the other. Atheists, as you'll see in this thread, will do just as much throat stuffing as Catholics.

In fact, I get the idea that the typical atheist response to the statement "Hey, I'm a Catholic," is to bring up creationism.

Don't confuse arguing with shoving ideas down people's throats, though. Just because one adamantly disagrees doesn't mean they are forcing an opinion upon the other person.

I am a christian. But I love hearing about different religions. I dont believe other religions are wrong. They might seem wrong to some people because their beliefs are different but i dont think other religions are wrong.

I agree with sniper girl. I love hearing about other religions, and trying to understand what everyone else sees. But I stand firm with what I believe and would hope no one would try to change who or what I am

Im an atheist and dont believe in any kind of God, however I respect religion as long as it doesnt affect others that dont believe in that religion. Then I think that its just hypocracy.

Studying religions with the intent of achieving some degree of enlightenment and to explore one's own spirituality is something I think everyone should do. You can read a book, then after you're done be like "nahhhh bullshit."

---------- Post added at 07:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:17 PM ----------

Not only that, but from a sociological standpoint, the study of religion is a necessity (for good work). The 5 major religions all are source of a SHIT ton of archetypal, thematic, symbolic,....etc. , as well, making theology a very beneficial thing for writers and english majors to study. Politically (obviously there is overlap with Socialogically), the historical and ongoing influence of religion on politics worldwide make it a subject I think all our politicians should know thoroughly.

The study of religion is not the problem. It's existence is not the problem. It's that humans are incredibly flawed and have flawed systems, and we seriously fuck up religion in its execution.

Just some thoughts.

Yeah, we can't help being flawed though. So that's how everything should be.
There was this awesome rabbi from the 12th century called Maimonides, and he wrote this book called "Guide for the Perplexed" and it dealt with the existence of god. But what was so unique and revolutionary about his book was that in the first half it completely proved that God didn't exist. Then in the second half he wrote just the opposite, completely proving the existence of God. Even nowadays if you ask a heavily orthodox rabbi about he will say that Maimonides was confused and doubtful when he wrote it. The only way for you to truly believe and appreciate something is to criticize it, and look for flaws.
