Essentially there are two types of Komp; Ladder, and Tournament.
A tournament is like the Krew Komp, or the recent Speed Komp.
Players (or teams) square off in a one-to-one game (round one) the winners of these games play each other, with the losers being knocked out during each round, until only two players (or teams) remain, The final.
To enter the team tournament you need to create a team within the Komp section, invite another player to join your team, and join the tournament. As each match is played, you will either advance to the next round, or be knocked out.
A ladder is a perpetual leaderboard. You register yourself as a player, then join the ladder. From there you challenge other players as you see fit. Normally you would challenge those who are higher up the ladder. You need to keep a score or screen shot of the match and report the outcome.
For all effective purposes, you could have a ladder for specific maps or gametypes, like a 3v3 Sabotage ladder, or a Shotties only ladder.
