MSI Afterburner

So I just started using this thing. I had it before but never really bothered with it.

Anywho, I turned on the temps while in-game and the max it got 79 degrees Celsius. What kind of temps should I be looking out for? Is there anything else I need to do on this program to make it do other stuff??

79 IMO is to high for COD, but probably still within the safe zone for your GPU. What kind of GPU do you have? Mine hit 77 yesterday while playing in the PB server b/c i had to turn off MSI and my fan was probably running at about 40%.

With MSI, you can use the OSD - on screen display to display your temp, FPS, and other stuff while in game. Thats what i do. PB will kick you for it however. You can also set up profiles that adjust your GPU fan speed according to temp. For example if it hits 70c you can have your fan kick up to 100%, but if it drops below 70c it will drop back to say 80% if that;s how you have it set up.

I pretty much just keep my fan speed at 90 or 100%.

If your GPU is getting that hot, i would set the fan at 100%.

You can also overclock your GPU with it.

Mine normally runs around 70C while playing in fullscreen mode, and sometimes it will hit around 80 if the temps in my room are fairly high, but IMO 80C ain't too bad for a gpu. Gpu's are made to handle high heat unlike CPU's that can overheat at these same temps.

I got a GTX 260 and from surfing a few posts I found that the max temps on this card is around 105C, so 80C I think is alright for it and not overheating it. And Damage is right you can also set the fan speeds too and it's not hard to figure out (unlike Riviatuner). If you need more help Wally just ask ;)

80c is in the safe zone, but still a lot higher than i would like for a non demanding game like COD4.

My gpu usually stays between 65-67c while in COD4 unless it's really hot out.

Yeah I got ya D, I think the 79C temp Wally gave I'm guessing is prolly with the stock fan speeds, of course we won't know until he replies but yeah more air flow is certainly better. There are times I played MW2 on SP that my temp would hit 80C constantly, and that was with 100% fan speed so there was nothing else I could do about that :'(

I got an Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS. When I bought my Dell it said it had 512mb. Though for whatever reason it also has another device that looks like a video card named Phys Ageia. I looked for specs on it and it also mentioned having 256mb.. So I'm assuming this PC has 512mb.

Here's info on the Nvidia card: http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html

I can't find any other info that mentions how much it can hold in temps.

So earlier today I was playing around with MSI and I manually entered fan speed of 100% and left it idling for a bit in a server that had people in it. I ended up taking a snooze (yes on my chair) and woke up a good 15 minutes later when I saw it reached 94 degrees Celcius. Ouch!!

Everything in my PC is bone stock, just added more RAM sticks but that's it.

Yeah I figured out the X part of the program lol

I can't figure out how to add the FPS on the OSD though.

Also, since I run my PC on 24/7 for most of the time, I have the side panel off for cooling so the temps I gave you were with the side panel off.

wally a 8600 should not be that hot. i would recomend you buy some new thermal paste and remove your gpu cooler and apply it. 80c is quite a bit man. my gts 250 dosent even hit 76c on full load with a stress test. so yea thermal paste and it should be ok after that.

I'm not gonna go through the trouble. I'm still saving up (not really, money is there - wife just needs to say OK :D ) so that I can order new parts for a new PC.

thanks for the tip though.

haha alright. wait a few months tho, new processors are around the corner. bulldozer from AMD and sandy bridge from intel. if you were planning to go budget build, wait anyway. by then today's processors would have gone down in price.

:D My GTX 260 will go to at least 82C when I'm playing MW2, I'm not worried about it though after finding out that the max temp on it is around 105C, 82's not really that close to it IMO.

gtx 260 is massively more powerful than a 8600, so its not that big of a deal that it hits 82c. its only natural that it generates more heat

with that theory I'm always going to be waiting. :-[

as soon as I get the go ahead, I'm pulling the trigger. Screw AMD, I'm sticking to Intel. Hackintosh is much easier to build with Intel than AMD. ;D

go for it man. but its no theory, its just that the new architectures are being released very very soon. by the time your done saving up it should be out.
