So is the actor who played Private Pyle. He was in Law and Order Criminal Intent for some years. Very good actor.

R Lee Ermey was pretty great in this movie....playing himself.

Yes, he was very good, but his role came very naturally as he was a Drill instructor in San Diego and Parris island between 65-67. He deployed to Vietnam in 68 for Fourteen Months .

Even funnier, was the fact that he wasn't originally casted for the role.

He was a military advisor. The director saw him showing the casted actor "how to", and put him in the role instead. The guy that was the door gunner hanging out of the Wessex was the guy originally casted for the role.

Damage is still alive coz he had a stand in for the headshot scene. Natch.
