So, it seems like the maker of rei's minimap hasn't really been updating his mod recently. I went looking for another minimap mod and I found VoxelMap. Apparently Rei's is a fork/clone of the original VoxelMap mod. The latest version has nether/cave mapping, it can show players and mobs on the minimap, and it has other various options. It's interface is cleaner too.
If you want to use it with Optifine (recommended), then download the non-forge version and install it just like you would rei's minimap.
