For the longest time, say up until 2001 or so, the M-16 weapon chassis was ignored and only really had iron sights but after 9/11 a lot of R+D was put into developing technology for that weapon so we see thermal sights, infrared sights, ACOG and other optical sights.

it's about time b/c iron sights are pretty limited, especially past about 200 meters.

Which I guess is why the Australian Army went from the FN L1A1 SLR:

to the Steyr:

In reality, I preferred the early one. A good model in the right hands can easily hit prone targets at 300m. And that's pretty much all you need. Although the Steyr did have a left handed conversion which was sort of handy. Well, necessary for me because the ejection port would have been right at my face. But it was only a half arsed conversion, with the cocking lever on the left, making in necessary for me to reach under the weapon with the fore grip folded to cock. Needless to say I never had to conduct rifle drill demonstrations or lessons, lol. And the pistol grip used to give me blisters.

As far as versatile weapons goes though, i love the good old MP5, coz you can do things like this with it:

I have to say i enjoyed my steyr. Mine was a dark green tho rather then that ugly brown. I to had problems cocking it but it was a great reliable gun. I regret selling it but i will get another one soon. That is wierd that the grip gives you blisters. I never had a problem with that.

I thinks it was because the trigger was right up close to the body, so my hand had to be right up the top of the pistol grip. The body being quite wide at that point meant the first knuckle of my thumb would rub against the body at that point (the body flares out unlike the body of the SLR which was narrow).
