In case anyone is interested. HBO is doing this to promote it's new shows, primarily True detective, which looks quite good. HBO has always made incredibly good series.
Apparently the preview only extends to a 'freeview' which can be found in the On demand menu. These companies are so greedy anymore they won't even unlock the channel for regular viewing, nor will they offer cheaper subscription services to their websites for streaming. And these idiots wonder why so many people pirate their shows.

There’s a ton of providers taking part in a free preview of HBO & Cinemax this weekend to promote the series premiere of True Detective and the season premiere of Girls. The Place Beyond the Pines also makes its HBO debut this weekend.
