I must say that those headphones in the first link seem largely expensive due to bells and whistles, and not for sound quality. Their primary selling points have nothing to do with sound quality.

7.1 surround sound is a joke selling point. It's just Digital Processing, it's not actually 7.1 surround sound. And as there is no subwoofer, I can't see how they can really sell it as ''7.1''

Also, unless you're playing a game that has audio encoded with 7 discreet channels, 7.1 surround sound is just going to be an added effect to the sound they have coded in the game. Usually, it's at best 5.1. But who knows? I haven't noticed anything more than Stereo coding in cod4 sound. It's possible it has forward/back audio coding, but i can't see it actually being mixed for 5.1, especially seeing as it's making dynamic realtime sound.

There's a difference between 5.1 sound and 5.1 digital surround sound.

Just sayin'

One is artificial, and one is actually 5 channels master.

And let's say you have 5.1 sound from cod4..... if you use a stereo out headphone jack from your computer into a stereo input coax on your system, you can only get 5.1 from post processing on your system (post processing would be like DD Pro Logic). You can't send 5.1 digital signal through stereo IN, and AFAIK your headphone jack doesn't support 5.1 discreet channels.

You'd need to have a digital OUT, coax or Optical going into a digital IN on your amp/receiver OR there would have to be 5 or 6 separate outs (5.1), depending on how your system works.

The only way you can really get the real digital signal in those headphones is thru USB or your headphone jack IF it supports digital out, which most don't. So, i get it that the headphones are receiving legit 5.1 signal, but surround sound falls far short of real surround systems in most cases.

Long story short, every headset recommended in the original post founds as good as generic brand single sheet toiletpaper feels.

I know how it works. Thats why i said having 6-8 channels in your headphones makes no sense because the channels all blend together when you just have two drivers.

My brother uses a 5.1 system and it makes cod sound sooo epic.

As you can see in this, sometimes there is more than one driver in each ear.

Also, using sound cancellation and time delay, you can make things sound in different areas. That's how bose can pull off that crazy sound placement.

However, since the headphones still seem to use stereo sound, and the soundspace between driver and ear is so small, i can't see how they work well.

I think them calling it 5.1 or 7.1 is epic bs. I agree with kreubs.

The Trittons are definitely the only way to go for surround sound headsets. But, as TD said with the tiny distances involved, with out forking out the cash it's unsure how useful it would be.

What I can say, is that if you have a proper 5.1 set up, and the game supports it, it's a major sound whoring advantage. I havent had this set up since Half Life, but I can tell you, when some one is trying to sneak up behind you, you hear them BEHIND you. Turn and fire. BAM.

With normal headsets you ned to turn around a bit to "triangulate" some sounds.

My problem is I normally have one side of my 'phones off as I need to hear the real world too. And I certainly cant use speakers at night with peeps sleeping in da house.

The post was meant to be taken as "hey if you had a nice 2.1 higher end headset maybe you could actually hear the sounds in game"

Who the fuck would uses 7.1 in COD4? Or any COD game for that matter.

I think that headphones made to hear certain things like footsteps and stuff like that would have to sound like shit for other stuff. Just the way the drivers are tuned.

Because i just saw it :ayfkm:

They do, the razors sound pretty bad for everything else but gaming in 2.1 since the mids are so damn high so you can hear the walking of foot steps . Although when you use the digital 7.1 and tweak all the settings on the headphone on how you want each speaker to sound in faked 7.1 sounds orgasmic. They did a good job with the Maelstorm on forcing it into 7.1 digitally allowing for a very pleasing movie/music experience. Was well worth the 100 I paid on Craigslist :megusta:
