A PIONEER of the computer industry whose iconic Commodore 64 trumped Steve Jobs’ Apple in its day has died aged 83
Jack Tramiel’s machine became the biggest selling single personal computer model of all time despite being up against early offerings from the now dominant iPad maker.
The retro machine was low-priced which helped Commodore International sell nearly 17million of them into homes around the world.
Tramiel originally founded the firm as an importer of TYPEWRITERS before moving on to making electronic calculators.
The firm made its first PC in 1977 – the same year Apple came out with its Apple II - but the Commodore 64 did not appear until 1982.
He left the company in 1984 saying the firm needed more professional management but later took over troubled games console maker Atari.
Tramiel, who survived Auschwitz during the Holocaust, passed away on Sunday at his home in Mount Sereno, California.
