The hobbit, if you wish to put it in laymans terms, is a prequel to the LotR trilogy, as you can see near the end of this trailer, Bilbo Baggins finds the Ring of Power (the one ring, etc...).

You really should go and read The Hobbit, and if you have time enough, read the trilogy.
