well ive been having issues with my shop bought router and its getting to the stage now that i have to restart it 2 or 3 times every few days. this would be fine if i did not have to then setup my network printer again. the big problem with shop bought routers is that once you start loading them up or pushing them hard they dont like it. so when downloading alot/big files or playing games online it tends to dislike these things and starts running slow or crashes and finds it even harder when you have more than one pc connected and working at the same time. if you open your router up you will see inside there is a small cpu chip and a ssd ram chip and this is what works the firewall and tends to crash. i tried adding a 80mm fan to my router to try and cool the ram and cpu chip to try and get it to work better but it just dose not seem to have help so i then had an idea that i have two spare computers sitting around doing nothing and i could use the parts to build myself my own router with just a few extra parts needed.
well ill be using an old intel celeron processor and an asrock motherboard along with a small hard drive (the smallest drive i have at them moment is a 60gb western digital sata drive but i will be looking for a ide 1gb drive to replace it with). im not sure the processor speeds but it has a 60gb hard as said and 256mb of DDR ram (not sure of the speed tho)
pretty much any old pc will do but this is a spare i have so it maybe overkill but its better it dose something and helps me out than just sit there doing nothing. altho this is overkill its not really that much good for anything else theses days (i dont think id even like to use it just to surf the internet or use for word docs, videos etc its far to slow for that stuff now a days but could be a useful pc to give out if someones gose down to get them throw)
ill also be using a simple usb adsl modem and 16 port ethernet switch
quick look at the goods needed/ill be using
the basic pc
basic cheap usb modem. used to have one of these ages ago and it never gave up working altho its usb powered so used to get turned off alot but i guess ill see how good it really is when left on for a long time
16 port rack mountable 1000mbps ethernet switch. i went with this because its nice to have extra sockets and will save me having to unplug my pc from the internet if i need to do updates on a pc im building or fixing. also will give me space to add extra stuff to my network like printers servers etc.
network card for pcs just incase i get any trouble from the onboard lan
ive also got 1000 meters of cat 5 cable so i have the option to place it in the loft space to keep it out of sight or in the spare room maybe. i have thought about making a custom box for it aswell so i can have all of the bin one box and not have them take up so much space but for now the aim is to get it working.
i can not really get on with anymore until i have at least the modem turn up but once i get ill update and when i know the firewall works and have used ill post a link up so if anyone else wishes to do this they can and ill also be in a better place to help with advice on setting up the firewall as i will have used it. the firewall im going to be using tho dose support adsl and cable so most people should be able to do this.
