Minecraft anyone?

Can anyone explain what are the benefits of running a Minecraft server of our own? I'm not saying we're getting one, but the possibility may be there.

Minecraft servers always lag LOADS + very little people in here actually play it + There are TONS of griefers who just destroy every single bit you worked so long at. I say dont do it at all. I cant find benefits.

I want to get minecraft, but I don't know when I'll have time to play it, it seems like a game that takes alot of commitment. But if we do plan on getting a minecraft server could we look into seeing if they have a survival mode server. I think that would be cool if I could play a survival mode with buddies.
