Strange Pc Problem

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I took my skinny ass to the gym to get buff. I worked out for like ten seconds and went back home :K. When I returned home, my desktop was all messed up.

The screen was flickering and I couldn't see anything. Sometimes it would stop now and then, but as soon as I clicked on something, it would flicker again. The screen was half black with this line going through it.

I thought my monitor was broken, but when I started up my pc, the gateway/Windows logo was working fine. Also, it worked fine when I had my computer off but the monitor was still on. It would give me a "no signal" sign that worked perfect.

I called tech support and they told me to do something in BIOS. I tried but I couldn't see what the hell I was doing. They told me to download a driver but I couldn't see anything. Then they told me to do the factory restore on my computer, but I COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING :raging:. I will show you guys pictures of what my screen looked like.

Today, I woke up and it was even worst. Now, the windows and gate way logo was flickering. I went to this job training/interview and came home. When I returned home, the computer was working fine. There was no flicker and I can see everything perfect now.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what was happening? If so, let me know.

Thanks

Here are the pictures.

what gfx card do you have? does it have a fan on the card? if it does, take the side off and see if it's dusty. If it is, then blast it out with compressed air. DO NOT PUT A VACUUM CLEANER INTO YOUR PC. If it aint dirty it seems that your gfx card might well be faulty. how old is the pc? is it still under warranty?

I didn't try any other monitors because I don't have any. Does peeing on everything really help all your problems Dude? :K. I will try that next time it happens then. I will try what you suggested Animal thanks. That sounds like that might be the problem. The pc isn't even a year old that's why I thought it was strange. I'm still under warranty with the company, so I have to send it into them to get fixed I can't just walk in which sucks. I will let you know what kind of gfx card I have in a bit. Wish I could just take it into geek squad.

Might be a good idea to go ahead and clean the gfx card now to PREVENT that from happening again. But I've had that exact problem and cleaning the gfx fan fixed it for me on three different occasions.

If your monitor is meant solely for PC use, than if you can, try to get another PC or laptop and connect it to that monitor and see if the symptons(sp?) are the same. If so, you have a bad monitor. If it looks fine, than it's your graphics card, that's if you have one that is.

and NEVER factory restore, it will delete all your stuff and return you to factory settings. What kind of tech support is that? lol

Your video card is failing. That would be my first guess. I would recommend you try to install windows on another partition and see if it boots up normally. If it does then it's a bad driver bug. But honestly I am 99% sure your video card is failing. Sorry bro.

Do you have a dedicated video card? If you do, open your tower and take it out. Then plug your monitor into your onboard video (if it has one which most motherboards do). You shouldn't be having these problems after you did this. Like I said before I am almost sure that your video card is failing/failed.

I just had a thought. it might be a good idea to ask gateway if it's ok to take the side off the pc if it's under warranty. some manufacturers are a bit iffy about that sort of thing.

Ah thanks I was just about to start taking off the side. I will give them a call first.

Lol some tech support in India I think. I don't know why we can't have American tech support people. I never can understand what the tech support person is talking about due to their accents. They always yell at me saying they can't hear me too. I'm like screaming at them trying to give them my information.

Ah urine goes a long way then.

Once I take it out do I just leave it out or plug it back in?

Anyways, I'm going to head to the store to buy some of that compressed air stuff.

Just out of curiosity, did you manage to sort the problem? If so, what was it?

Believe it or not, last time I checked, India's literacy rate for english was higher than America's.

That is including the hugely impoverished sections of india, I believe.

That's embarrassing.

I'm not sure if I managed to sort the problem because it kind of fixed it self. I did do what you and others said and I cleaned the inside of it. I called the tech support people and they seemed cool about it. They said only if I was to break something inside the computer my warranty would be void. I don't think I could do much harm just using that compressed air stuff though. They still didn't give me a reason yet on what could of been wrong with it but w/e. As for it being dusty, well there was hardly any dust in there at all. There was like only one big chunk of lint that flew out as soon as I opened it lol. Maybe, the dust just wasn't visible.

Sometimes it's faulty or loose cables. I usually start by troubleshooting the "free" way; cables, updating drivers, connecting other PC's, before I start changing anything major in the PC. Nothing like spending some dough and/or sending it to the manufacturer for repair when the problem might of been something like a loose cable.

edit:
either way, glad it's doing much better.
