Welcome to the 2nd tech news article by Joe momma! Let’s just dig right in shall we?
First up, CPU/APU news. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has started shipping its first performance level APU to OEM venders. This chip is known as “Llano”. Llano is based on the new enhanced K10.5 architecture which will have anywhere from 2-4 processing cores, we well as an on-chip 6 series GPU. This chip will have AMD’s newest 32nm technology instead of the aging 45nm process that is in the current AMD lineup. One thing to note is that this first generation of Llano will NOT have level 3 cache. This means that this chip is more like the Athlon II rather than the Phenom II (which has L3 cache). It’s most almost certain that it will outperform the Phenom II lineup in CPU processing performance but other than that not much else is known at this time. AMD did release a video benchmarking both quad core sandy bridge as well as a quad core Llano in real life situations. The Llano held up remarkably well in multitasking as well as games thanks to its very powerful on-die GPU. A 2nd generation of Llano chips is expected sometime in 2012 and will be using bulldozer cores rather than the aging K7 based architecture. 1st gen chip will be available to mid-performance notebooks as well as budget-performance desktops sometime in Q3 of this year.
In bulldozer news, AMD has announced that yields are good on the upcoming architecture code named “Bulldozer”. This architecture will not use traditional cores, but rather modules. Each module will have 2 threads running on dedicated hardware and you can have up to 4 modules in the consumer version of this chip. This style of hardware multithreading is called CMT (Continuous mutli-threading). AMD will also be introducing the new Turbo core 2.0 which will dynamically overclock your CPU cores when you need the extra juice. AMD is also introducing Hypertransport 3.1 which will allow all modules to communicate with each other and share resources thus improving bandwidth with 23% or more. AMD is planning to release 8 different bulldozer based chips known as “Zambezi”. The first 4 will be released around Early June (10th maybe?) and will consist of 4, 6, and 8 core models. AMD also stated that they are dropping the current naming scheme and using letters from now on. The 8 core bulldozer for example is called FX-8130p, 6 core will be called FX-6XXX and so on. The 2nd batch of bulldozer chips are expected around Q4 just in time for the enthusiast Intel sandy bridge lineup. Server bulldozers are expected in Q3 this year.
In smart phone news, HTC has planned a new multimedia powerhouse smart phone called “HTC Sensation” that is capable of doing just about anything with ease thanks to its 1.2ghz Qualcomm dual core ARM CPU. It also comes with a generous 768MB of ram, 8MegaPixel camera (capable of recording 1080p video) and a VGA front facing camera. Should be out pretty soon, no word on battery life yet.
Apple is said to be holding an event on June 6th this year to show off a new version of OS X, as well as the new iPhone 5 and new iOS 5. The iphone is rumored to have a new 4inch display (iphone 4, 3GS, 3G and 1st gen all have 3.5inch), a top of the line Sony™ 8megapixel camera, and a dual core apple A5 chip. Some speculate iOS might finally get a better notifications system, as well as gadgets (like android) but only time will tell.
Nvidia recently released a GTX 590 video card which is sporting 2 GF110 gpu dies (same dies found in the GTX 580) and comes packed with 3GB of Gddr3 memory. This card is super fast, super hot, and super expensive. The pricetag on this bad boy is $699. AMD also released a dual gpu video card, the AMD 6990 is even hotter, has even more ram (4GB) and is slightly faster (by a nose hair). But the 6990 also costs the same ($699).
Apple macbook pro 2011 models seem to be having problems according to consumers, when the 2400 dollar laptop goes under load it seems to crash. Apple currently has a multipage thread on its forums with many angry apple users complaining about the crashing. Apple released a update for os x (10.6.7) but it did not fix the problem. No word on when apple will get a working update.
Microsoft seems to have a breach of security today, because a early build of its upcoming operating system has been LEAKED! The GUI itself looks very similar to windows 7 (this is to be expected as Microsoft is known on making gui designs last and getting a fully working OS first) but other than that I’m not too sure what has changed as I haven’t used it myself. More news on this will be posted as soon as it arrives.
The nonprofit company Mozilla has released a new nightly build which will eventually become firefox 6. This version of nightly has some MAJOR speed improvements and it seems as though it will start giving Google’s very own chrome a run for its money. I guess we will just have to wait and see how this works out. Currently chrome is on its 12th version (unstable) and 10th (stable). Personally I would like to see firefox make a comeback.
If you liked it comment! I spent alot of my time writing this (2 hours) so I do appreciate it!
