Do I need SSD right now?

Well my wife needs a hard drive for the Wii. Since I bought a 500gb hard drive for 35 bucks when I built my rig a few months ago I'm thinking about giving her that and spending some cash on an SSD.

I'd only use it for the OS and main games like BO and cod4. I have other drives I can install the other programs on.

Would the extra cost be THAT beneficial for me?

Help. Thanks I advance!

If you have the money to do so, you may as well. They are CONSIDERABLY faster than even the Raptor (if a hell of a lot more expensive). I would be careful though as some programs refuse to be installed anywhere but the windows root drive. Adobe CS4 for example. Also, steam seems to want to only install on the root drive as well. (At least in my experience)

But, the responsiveness is something to envy.
This is a good article on some ssd's. (If a little overkill in content):

Well i think it boils down to, is spending a lot of extra money worth saving some time on boot up and opening programs. Yes it will be much faster, but is it really worth all the extra money to shave some time off of a reboot?

IMO, it's a no, but that's me. The SSD should in theory last longer since it has no moving parts. That's deff another point to consider. If it was me, id get two or three new HDD's instead of a SSD.

I hear you, the prices are outlandish. and even in my case I have went with multiple HDD's instead of a SSD. It's the next purchase I want to make for my rig but, I don't see any point in a drive smaller than 128Gb, even just for the OS, and at the prices I still can't justify the expense. Still, all things being equal, if I had the extra 200-300$ to spend/blow, I would do it in a second.

Wally, I suppose the real question is whether or not the money is best spent on the SSD or whether a 70$ HDD and a 150$/200$ elsewhere wouldn't help your system preform better.

As for 'needing' a SSD, I don't think anyone truly 'needs' one. Not for gaming, that's for sure. But, they sure are cool :) I damn well want one.

C"MON! That's like saying is it worth that extra hundred bucks for a few more FPS..
You're damn right it is!
And on the subject of giving your wife the hand-me-down components.... +1!!

Thanks for the info fellas! Yeah, it's probably a bit expensive right now but if I'm gonna wait, that means I'm gonna wait forever. New things, better things are created which means higher prices but means older equipment and cheaper prices. My theory is, why wait if I'm always gonna want what's new? So if it means paying a premium so I can have something that newer, faster then so be it.

I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy a 64GB SSD. The wife has been bugging for days now that she wants her stinking hard drive. So it was either get her the 1TB or spend a bit more and get myself an SSD. So in reality, is it a waste? Maybe but I wont know 'til I actually own one I suppose.

The only minor downfall is that I probably will be using all the 64GB's and I'd really wish I could get the 128GB, that'd be perfect but since I have other plans like purchasing a Mac Mini within the next week or 2, I probably wont need the bigger drive. I plan to make the Mini into a home server and possibly host the music, videos and other minor stuff I have to cut the crud out of my gaming rig. At least that's how I'm justifying it.

Socrates, here's my PC build that was done mid-November: http://www.kkkgaming.com/showthread.php?2293-My-PC-Build I don't think I'd need much more of anything at this point besides the SSD. ;)

So now, I've come up with 2 SSD's:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7010579&CatId=5300

I think I'm gonna aim for the Crucial though. But it's still up in the air. What do you guys think?

yea, they're overpriced atm but they seem fast.
I stuck a 64 GB SSD in my main gaming desktop for the OS and it seems really fn fast.

Plus, it's quieter and takes less power.
I think vendors are still riding the "gee whiz" factor in their pricing model but that wil probably drop like USB prices did.

Once the 256GB drops to a dollar a gig I'll get one.

Yeah, I think you've got the rest of the system covered for sure. :) And I'm with you; you might as well have the best hardware in your rig. I subscribe to the same philosophy :) A SSD is really All I want as well...well I could always use better GPU's or 3 of them...my MB supports it...but I could sink a months salary in to my computer if I'm not careful. I posted my pc on the forum page so I won't repeat it here, but excessive comes to mind. :)

Anyway, I think I would probably go with the Crucial as well. The Write speed is almost comically slow but, If it's only for a couple games and the OS, then it doesn't really matter. And the Read speed is awesome.

Just forked over $137 for the crucial. w00t! :D

Bad thing I should of done it sooner so it could of arrived this week, now I gotta wait probably 'til at least Tuesday. Darn!

I didn't really mind the write speed since I wont be doing much of that anyway.. it's the read speed that I was mainly concerned about. Besides, it got some fairly good reviews so might as well go for it.

/me runs to check your rig specs.

edit:

1 word: Wow!!

And here I thought mine was a beast! Your rig makes mine look like a puppy! LOL. No biggie, I'm quite content with what I have at the moment and hopefully the SSD can give me a bigger smile. :D

Nice!!

You'll have to let me know how it is. After I pay off my Microcenter card I am definitely picking a SSD up!

I actually envy you having new parts to put in your PC! I think I enjoy building the damn things more than I enjoy playing games on them...

Have fun!

SSD arrived today! w00t! newegg was having issues with shipment notification so it kept saying it was still in the DHL warehouse or something like that... Check the mail this morning and saw the yellow package. :D

I should of saved my stuff yesterday cuz I had quite a bit of it...

Anywho, I already installed the OS and a few minor things. Got cod4 running on there as well.

Installing Windows 7 was quite a breeze! As well as cod4 and just about anything else I install onto it! I didn't notice a difference in gameplay but it sure feels good that every program and the OS loads up faster.

I have 36GB free space left and I read that I shouldn't pass the 70% threshold. Something to do with how things get erased or some crap like that. I'm not tooooo worried because I am running a 160GB HDD and I'm installing programs, music and just about everything else onto it.

So far, I'm stoked on the upgrade! :)

Can't wait for these little bad boys to go down in price so I can grab me another one later on.
