yer i havent checked him out much, but it's nice to have hip hop made by people that can spell...
and i listen to a lot of music. I love rage against the machine to death. I love jimi hendrix to death. I was SO into zeppelin when i was in middle school. AC/DC for a while back then too. I was really into sublime for a while. There was a period of a couple of months when all I listened to was Phish. Then i got into other jam band shit from that. Doesn't do much for me now, but sometimes it's nice to revisit. I used to listen to NWA and shit. I got into primus for a little while. Then I got back into Hendrix, but in a different way, and I listened more to late hendrix. I got more into improv from teh jam bands, and primus was kinda related to that. And this whole time I am getting into the blues as well. Started listening more to songs with long solos. Derek Trucks and Little Milton and robert cray, albert king, freddie king, and then also some really old blues. Lightnin slim and shit. And from there I got really into soloing. Started with hendrix though.
Then I got into weather report, which was the first real jazz thing I liked. It's kinda fusion. I stil don't like all their shit. At first, I only OD'ed on a couple of songs (the ones that were heavily blues change based I/IV funk jams and shit), that were easier for me to hear. It's tough to wrap my ear around all these things right away. I used to hate John Coltrane, first time i heard him. Now he is my idol. Basically, at first it sounds like unintelligeable notes to me. Then you start to recognize patterns and melodies and licks and sounds. Songs get broken down into smaller and smaller recognizable things like that. Then I can actually hear it, and understand it. And the melodies that are there really can be beautiful and badass sometimes. Sometimes horn players play some regular bebop shit (which was OUT back whe bebop came out). Sometimes guys play just FUCKED UP shit. It's not just about having a persona you can call smart. It's all about the music. So of course I like hip hop, or some of it. I still love wu tang, lol.
My roommate last semester was really into electronic shit and he produces so i got into some stuff from him. I just happen to like jazz a lot. I already hear all this other stuff, like blues and older rock, but jazz is hard for me to hear right now. It's got a lot more going on, and for me it is more rewarding to listen to. I do not listen to jazz and think about music theory or note values, i listen to jazz and smile (assuming it's not shitty jazz). Sometimes bands get so intense i can't stop laughing when im listening. More like that with live bands. One time this guy Allyn Johnson took this like 15 chorus solo over giant steps (he plays piano, local D.C. guy) and he just fucking manhandled it. It was insane. I am smiling thinking about it, lol. but yea, i really like a lot of other music, too. I am just an opinionated asshole.
It's kinda funny like when I go to a gig, the fall back for callin songs is always a blues. That's like where you start explaining how to play a song. Or maybe you got a noob (like me) on the stand sitting in, and he doesn't know any of the tunes you wanna call, and he can't remember the changes you tell him, or can't play them so basically it comes to "ahhh fuck it, let's just play a blues." Then someone just makes the head up or they play one of the fkin hundreds of blues heads out there. Usually just pick a key (f or Bb usually, major or minor, c minor sometimes) and jsut kinda start. Rhythm section follows along with the soloist, or sometimes the rhythm section will throw some different chord changes in if itll sound good, and the soloist has to react. That's not just with blues though. But the blues form is so easy to manhandle like that. So much shit you can move around. You can HEAR almost anything as a blues if the form is 12 bars. Whatever...... ramble ramble
So yea... lol, im into a lot of music.
