:iagree:  :cheer: For John Ryan.

My fav band is of course Metallica. I like all Metallica, from 81 to 2010. Ok, i don't like St.Anger all THAT much, but it's got some good songs. Other stuff i like is some Slayer, the older stuff - Seasons in the abyss or anything earlier. Everything after that was utter trash IMO. I like Godsmack, Disturbed, some Megadeth, Machine head, Jimi Hendrix, Some Pink Floyd, Some Zeppelin, Some Van Halen, All that remains, Some Dio, Some sabbath, Some Ozzy, some Ill Nino, Some Maiden, Some Pantera , you get the idea lolz.

I am a collector of live Metallica Shows. Right now i have 458 Live shows from 81 through the current tour. I have every show from LiveMetallica.com, mostly in FLAC. No i didn't pirate them lol. I'm in a group that splits the shows costs and then upload to all members. I also have like 40-50 Metallica DVD's. Most are A+ Quality Bootlegs with Pro or Dubbed LiveMet audio, the rest are commercial DVD's. The Blu Ray from the show in France last year is Fkn amazing.

Actually techno and rave are the "in" thing. All those people out there who talk to me like "Yaaaaa, you know, it's something special MOST people aren't into." are just wrong. It is what most people are into. It's what all the cool people at school listen to. It's the new pop music. I am at music school and it's what all the people who can't spend effort ltraining their ear and working hard at music want to do. There are a few gret musicians in the rave scene, but currently all it takes is a keyboard and a basic sense of mathemetics to make a passable techo groove. Dubstep? pshh, once we finally get over the soimple fact that you can make a "whomp" with lfo filters (among other things), we will start getting into the true sound of it, and I think it can be great. Until we have some really dedicated and humble musicians doing it, solely for the music, that's not gonna happen. I am talking from experience here, lot's of my friends are IN the business of producing these kinds of music. I started listening to dubstep 4+ years ago. I also, myself, know my way around some audio editing.

Berklee's MP&E program, ELPD program, Music Business program are all cutting edge and what the majority of students want to go into now. It is not only where the money is, but much of it is not a full study of music (training your ear, listening to a lot of music, know how to write music on the spot, opening your mind to new sounds). It is a very valuable program. The RIAA is going to be smashed by the guys that are graduating Berklee with MP&E degrees. I also think dubstep and electronic music has the potential to be great.

Wouldn't it be cool if you could sample an accent, without taking any words at all?

But honestly, people in no way hate electronic music. It is one of the biggest music scenes in the country. How the people retain the idea that it is some cult music and they are special for liking some kind of music in any way, baffles me. I like jazz, but I have never thoguht I am special for it, whether you guys agree or not.

I hate four to the floor though man. It's like tiesto has a 4 to the floor beat that he just copys and pastes every time he starts a new song, and just goes from there. Copy+Paste is not how music, or art in general, should be done.

electronic music is pretty much pop now (popular music). At least where I am living and have lived it is. From what I heard it even more popular in europe. From an industrial and commercial standpoint, generic pop and electronic music are very similar as well.

yea, any "electronic" beat is liked here in Europe, but always among young ppl under 30 years. However, popular love songs or national pop always are in the top of the most listened list and any other similar thing. You will never find a DJ´s song in the top 50 or 10 (except David Guetta, which I hate)

tiesto is one of the most commercial "dj's" I know of. He is on some chart somewhere i guarantee it. I am pretty sure that one of the big reasons electronic music hasn't hit charts in a big way is that the people who listen to electronic music get it mostly for free (downloading and sharing). Older folks, for the most part, get music the more conventional (and sometimes more ethical) way: buying it. So the group that are consumers of music in the market are the ones that listen to generic pop. Electronic music is in no way an underground or minority genre. The ease in which it is produced and trafficked, one that is increasing constantly, I believe is one of the big reasons it has become so popular in recent years. It is also the easiest music to "perform" live. It is one of the most profitable kinds of music to perform for this reason, and the amount of electronic shows attests to this. Electronic artists are also much more independent from big production companies and record labels because they can manage most of the production on their own, as opposed to pop artists who really could not sell, or even make, an album without businesses like that.

My roommate last semester demonstrated this kinda shit to me one time. He showed me 3 minutes of some tutorial on reason about making techno. He popped open reason and pretty much said "you just do this" and in a couple of hours he had a song that sounded like tiesto. Obviously, to make it commercial quality he'd need to touch some shit up, but that wouldn't take too long.

Dubstep and related sub-genres do require a lot more techy kowledge to pull off. Dubstep is actually, as a whole, based on 1 production technique, which gives an artist a lot of possibilities.

It's fun music, man. In 5 years or less I think we will be able to officially consider it pop music. I don't see why this is a bad thing, except for the tendency of music in genres that sell to be limited by the artists that produce only what they know will make money. Hopefully electronic music, and music in general, can separate itself from the big companies that promote that kind of commerciality.

I know, u r absolutelly right. Nothing to discuss there. In fact my fav DJ, DJ splash, its just a normal guy that started making random music and he then became famous. He never gives out concerts or anything like that, he doesnt even has vids for his songs; however hes as famous as Tiesto in the world of Trance and Fast techno. And yea, he doesnt have an album either so I have to download his music. :)

yea i feel like once musicians can sell their music 2.99 an album online and make 90% profit, people won't rip them off so much. Concerts are good though. That's where electronic music shines I feel. That's what it's made for right? I mean venetian snares isn't dance music, but for the most part techno is. Dubstep songs in almost all cases are structured to be played at raves. They have (according to my dj friend here) minimum 2 buildups and 2 drops. This allows the dj to keep the music going through different songs without screwing the dance up when they switch songs. Tiesto was famous in my highschool. I had very little respect for him to begin with, and after living with last semester's roommate and learning some stuff about production and shit, i lost whatever respect I had.

For the most part though, rave music isn't really about interesting harmony or melody. It's about the pulse (harmonically and rhythmically), and whatever mechanism can deliver that the best. (obviously different mechanisms will give different amounts of "energy.")
