The lightsaber was irritating me as well at first. But after reading some comments on a movie page, it does make sense.
The two short pieces on the left and the right make it impossible for an opponent to chop the hands off.

Despite my pissy comment, i'll probably enjoy this movie. I've liked five of the six Star Wars movies so far. The only one i didn't like was Episode I. I may have to re-watch it, as i only saw it once. I saw Episode II many times, along with the originals, of course.
