Car Stories

People drive them. People ride them. People crash them. Cars.

I figured everyone has at least one close call/road-rage/car wreck story. I'd love to hear some.

I'm 17, and I had never experienced a car accident, let alone see one happen. (I see wreckage all the time, but never never had one unfold around me.) Anyway, I had my first real experience last night.

I live in Illinois, and it just snowed about eight inches yesterday. It was the first snow of the season, so no one was used to driving in it. Anyway, I was driving to college on a highway at ~8:30 p.m. The highway was two lanes with a full shoulder on the right side. The road was moderately busy. I'm in the right lane going 65 mph. (105 kph)

There's a midsize SUV in front of me. Thankfully I was keeping a couple seconds distance between us. I'm driving along just fine, when all of a sudden the SUV starts getting squirrely. It slams on its brakes, crosses the shoulder, and grazes the right side metal guardrail. I'm assuming he overcorrected, because then he slid laterally all the way across the road to my left, crossing all the lanes and hits the concrete barrier. When he hit it, he hit it on the front left tire area, and because of his continued forward motion, he spun around. He kept the spin going until he crossed the road AGAIN and hit the guardrail before stopping.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to stop my car (2005 subaru forester) without losing traction. I managed to slow down without slipping, and got onto the shoulder right as came crashing to a stop. I think I was normalizing everything at this point. I put my emergency lights on and got out of the car and ran up to his car. I thought for sure he would be a mess. (The way he hit the concrete looked like it would have at least given him a concussion.) He stepped out, obviously in shock, but seemingly unhurt. He was confused as to how he crashed. I told him no one else got hit, and my car was fine. His car had minor damage, and was still drivable. He was a lucky dude for sure. Anyway, that's my story.

Had a guy earlier this year make a stupid move in front of me. I beeped my horn at him. He stopped in the middle of the road (55 mph speed limit). Got out of his car with a baseball bat in hand and started walking towards my car. I reached for my concealed pistol, drew it from the holster and put it out the window.

He stopped about 10 feet from my car and ran back to his. I put my pistol away and never heard from him again.

That's priceless. Alternatively, you could have revved your engine and slowly drive towards him. No one plays chicken against a car with just a baseball bat.

I have not been in or witnessed any accidents, but I have had some close calls. Phoenix drivers suck and I regularly have to deal with people riding my bumper so close I cannot see their headlights anymore, people pulling out without looking, and cutting me off on the highway at half a car length in front of me while going 75 mph. I even see people go bumper to bumper with 18 wheelers...
