Is a poll appropriate? Seems like it would work best for a quick pulse.

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere: a quick search didn't return any hits. I've run afoul of the language filter that's on A1 recently, and from comments in the shout box and from players it sounds like others have as well. It was mentioned that the filter might be set to its default values which are rather strict. I certainly see the usefulness of such a filter, but we have also had a fairly open policy regarding conversation that I'd hate to lose. What do you all think? Does this warrant further examination?

If you vote no, would you mind giving some reason? I don't immediately disagree, I just think it would be useful to get a complete picture since there may be cases I'm/we're not considering.

I'm not sure what the filters are set to, but if people are getting kicked for saying "f**k" i think it needs to change. One of the things that drew me back to K3 servers when i was first starting out was the very relaxed atmosphere and the people (especially members and mods) not taking things too seriously other than hacking , harassment, etc. All of the servers i tried before finding KKK always drove me away due to a myriad of inane rules and enforcement.

In other words, i don't like the policing of language unless it's blatant racism , harassment, etc. I get a little annoyed when i see members telling others to be nice, or not say this or that or the other thing. I miss how things were.

Anyone want to take a stab at when the issue first arose? That would help narrow it down.

And to clarify, the only thing we censor is racism. Other than that, anything goes (well, just about anything :p).

AFAIK, Houston was saying he got kicked for saying the word "fuck." It's in shout.

Yeah, i probably misread what he meant.
[DOUBLEPOST=1443578410,1443575593][/DOUBLEPOST]Either it got changed or it isn't working on me. I just went and cursed up a storm on A1 without issue.

cursing cause you get beaten by best... no problem
cursing just because you think its fun...useless and get me bored quickly...worth a kick if it gets annoying...
Insulting people for w/e reason...no bueno...kick/ban
Harassing people with insult...ban
Racist word...GTFO ban

Politeness and respect tend to disapear these days IRL due to the fact that more of people think they are still behind a screen and that being rude/insulting/just a douchebag is just idk "cool? IMO thats doesn't diserve them well...

fuck is not cursing, its punctuation ^^ but showing disrespect to other player is something i dont get the point...

We always had a no trashtalk rules so i dont also get why we are talking about this topic.
NO TRASH TALK - Offensive racial term, harassing people. Result = Ban!

So IMO if you dont want to get kicked by a bot keep in mind that politeness and respect are the two keys at the start of all relation between humans (even behind a screen where no one can slap your face if you show enough disrespect)

We're talking about it because the filter does not understand meaning. It simply attempts to match what is typed with what's in its list - if a match is found, players are kicked/banned, end of story, period. The problem is that there's a whole universe of expression that involves words on the list but isn't trash talk or disrespectful. Human administrators should make the distinction, not a one-size-fits-all binary bot.

I agree that we shouldn't play host to abusive language or behavior, but limiting what players can say because you think language is binary and a bot knows better is bullshit.

So IMO if you dont want to get kicked by a bot keep in mind that politeness and respect are the two keys at the start of all relation between humans

I agree that politeness and respect are key elements of sportsmanship, but consider this: what if I mistakenly drop a nade and blow myself up, then type "shit!" Am I being impolite and disrespectful, or am I being funny and self-deprecating? The bot will smack that down regardless of my actual meaning and that is a problem imo.

(even behind a screen where no one can slap your face if you show enough disrespect)

You can handle slapping people you disagree with in the face, but you can't handle mild language in a game on the internet?

Its not being impolite or self depreciating...its vulgarity
type "oops" instead of "shit"..."damn" "crap" works too..."failed"...there's plenty of works that would fit to that situation.

I know that a bot have no sense of humour and vulgarity can sometimes be funny. But he can handle mild langage on the internet ;) in a some binary and stupid way i agree but it kinda work hence the poll i guess ;)

I don't join a clan or play cod for a lesson in etiquette. Opinions on respect differ, so unless someone is specifically breaking a clear rule then they shouldn't be kicked or banned.

Agreed. As i said before, we aren't the word police. Unless it's specific and blatant harassment, racism , hacking or non-stop spam, let the player be. If you don't like vulgarity, don't read it and just play the game. It isn't hard to ignore chat.

We don't need to tell people to be nice or be this or that. I think that drives people away (i know it did me from other servers)

I just wanted to play my game and not have people on my ass over every little thing.
